HPI and what it means

I recently tried to trade my car in when getting a new car only to find that when they HPI'd it that it showed finance outstanding. Turns out they had accidently used my registration number for someone else's agreement, but it meant that I was unable to complete my purchase. It all turned out in the end once they realised that it was a clerical error. Below I have tried to give you a brief history of HPI and the useful function it provides.
